The Hair School was established in 1981 and has the esteem of being the longest-operating, state-licensed technical school in the industry on the Olympic Peninsula. The Hair School is dedicated to preparing students to meet the needs of an exciting and changing profession in the beauty industry supported by an innovative educational system, highly qualified instructors, and a professional setting.


Recognized as a Matrix Accredited School, a Paul Mitchell Academy, an Alterna Accredited School, a KMS Technical Institute, and a Goldwell Educator, The Hair School is fully-equipped to prepare students for the Washington State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam and advancement into the beauty industry as a stylist, colorist, makeup artist, manicurist, nail technician, esthetician, salon manager or owner, hair extension specialist, perm technician, or instructor.


Founder and Educational Director, Shara Smith-Widmer, is a certified Career and Technical Education teacher with the State of Washington and has invested over 6,000 hours in continuing education advancement. She holds a Masters Certificate for Education in Color by Goldwell, is a KMS Team Specialist, a graduate of Advanced Education with Brocato International, certified in Brazilian Blowout technique, and a professional make-up artist certified by Tigi and Mirabella.


The Hair School curriculum includes hands-on training along with an extensive video collection that covers product knowledge and advanced industry techniques. The Hair School keeps class sizes small to ensure maximum individualized instruction and good teacher-student ratios. Personal attention and individual training are the key components of The Hair School’s educational process.


Students who attend The Hair School have the flexibility of determining their own schedule and attending full-time or part-time.  The Hair School is also accredited by the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board for veteran education and training.


In its 33-years history, The Hair School maintains a 100% success rate for graduates successfully passing the Washington State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam.
